Visitor arrivals top 17 million for first eight months

The first eight months of 2007 saw a rise in visitor numbers of 21.8 percent, to 17,230,083, over the same period last year, according to information by the Statistics and Census Service.
Arrivals from Mainland China grew by 21 percent, to 9,432,058 and Hong Kong visitors went up 22 percent.
Meanwhile, visitors from Taiwan dropped slightly by 0.1 percent.
Same-day visitors made up 52.3 percent of total arrivals, at 9,012,494.
The Service stated that, as a result of the summer holidays, the umber of visitor arrivals for August reached 2,381,752, representing a year-on-year rise of 23.9 percent.
A rise was recorded with visitors from Mainland China (32.1 percent ) and Hong Kong (13.4 percent) whereas visitors from Taiwan dropped by 9.4 percent.
Meanwhile, same-day visitors accounted for 51.3 percent of total arrivals, or 1,222,406.
The majority of August’s visitors came from Mainland China (56.5 percent), Hong Kong (30.3 percent ) and Taiwan (5.1 percent).
Among the Mainland visitors, 48.2 percent or 648,987 people travelled to Macau under the Individual Visit Scheme.
When analysed by modes of transport, visitor arrivals by sea increased by 14.6 percent to 5,754,666 over the first eight months of 2006.
among these, 5,435,840 arrived at the Outer Harbour with 61.4 percent from Hong Kong and 24.2 percent from Mainland China.
Visitor arrivals at the Inner Harbour totalled 318,826 where 53.7 percent were from Mainland China.
At the same time, visitor arrivals by land increased by 26.5 percent to 10,533,698 where 10,363,942 entered by the Border Gate.
Of these, Mainland China visitors accounted for 73.6 percent while Hong Kong visitors accounted for 19.3 percent.
Meanwhile, there were 165,932 visitors arriving through the checkpoint of Cotai.
In addition, arrivals by air totalled 941,719, an increase of 17.5 percent over the first eight months of 2006.
Among the 933,994 arrivals at Macau International Airport, visitors from Taiwan made up 45.4 percent, Mainland China visitors totalled 22.2 percent and South east Asian arrivals took up 21.8 percent of the total.
