Visitor numbers up again, package tours up

Visitors on package tours from Taiwan and Hong Kong recorded the greatest change in numbers year-on-year during July 2007, according to figures from the Statistics and Census Service.
While visitors from Mainland China increased by 18.3 percent (to 218,995), those from Taiwan and Hong Kong rose dramatically, by 131.2 percent (30,086) and 227.3 percent (26,540) respectively.
There was also an overall increase of 41.1 percent year-on-year, of visitors arriving in package tours, totalling 320,378 in July.
Looking over the first seven months of 2007, visitors arriving in package tours also increased by 35.6 percent over the same period in 2006 to 2,276,872.
on the other hand, the number of Macau visitors travelling on package tours during July fell by 14.4 percent to 21,391 compared with the same period in 2006.
The most popular destinations were Mainland China, Thailand and Japan, accounting for 66.5 percent, 10.2 percent and 6.5 percent of the total respectively.
As well, the first seven months of 2007 also saw a fall of 23.3 percent to 119,361 in Macau residents travelling on package tours.
Meanwhile, 38,813 residents travelled under their own arrangements using services provided by travel agencies, an increase of 5.4 percent over July 2006.
The major destinations were Hong Kong (49.7 percent), Mainland China (22.0 percent) and Taiwan (12.3 percent).
The first seven months of 2007 saw a drop of 5.6 percent to 196,428 of Macau residents travelling under such arrangements, compared with the same period in 2006.
At the end of July 2007, the number of available guest rooms in the hotel industry increased by 9 percent or 1,067 rooms year-on-year, to 12,859 rooms.
A total of 470,524 guests checked into hotels and similar establishments in July 2007, reflecting a growth year-on-year, of 17.9 percent.
As well, the average occupancy rate also rose by 5.7 percentage points to 77.7 percent, with 4-star hotels leading, at 86.9 percent.
The average length of stay also increased by 0.1 night to 1.26 nights, with the majority coming from Mainland China (48.3 percent and Hong Kong (31.0 percent).
The total number of guests for the first seven months of the year were 3,165,629, up by 23.7 percent over the same period in 2006.
Finally, during the months to July 2007, hotel guests (excluding Macau residents) accounted for 42.6 percent of the total number of tourists, rising from 41.0 percent in 2006.
