Journalism greats the drawcard at Pulitzer workshops

The annual Pulitzer Prize Winners Workshop at Hong Kong Baptist University will take place between October 15 and 25, in an effort to broaden the vision of journalists in Greater China and to enhance journalism education.
The workshops will be open to the public and will be free for those attending although some lectures and forums may need to be booked in advance.
Each year the workshop invites four to six Pulitzer Prize winners or a two-weeks series of intellectual activities, including seminars and lectures, and meetings with students, faculty members, media professionals and the public.
This year’s prize-winning speakers include 1966 winner for international reporting, Peter Arnett, 1992 winner for feature photography, Professor John Kaplan, 1997 winner for explanatory reporting, Michael Vitez and Mei Fong, among the 2007 winning team for international reporting.
International advisors have also been invited to speak including the President of the US-China Education Trust, Ms Julia Chang Bloch, former Managing Editor of The Philadelphia Enquirer, Professor Gene Foreman, Swanlund Chair Professor, Leon Dash and Managing Editor of the Washington Week, Ms Gwen Ifill. A fine balancing act: 124 waiters racing downhill, trays in hand.

In celebration of ‘World Tourism Day’ yesterday, the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) held its annual Tray Race as well as the World Tourism Day banquet in the evening.
The traditional Tray Race was held in the afternoon, where spectators saw waiters and waitresses from 26 hotels and restaurants in Macau including The Landmark and Starworld, take part in a bid to be the first over the line.
A total of 124 participants ran down the stoned path from the Ruins of St Paul’s to Senado Square carrying a tray with a bottle of beer on it.
The winner of the men’s division was Mr Hu You Jun from Jai Alai Cantonese Restaurant and the winner from the women’s division was Miss Wu Shun Zhen  from Jai Alai Cantonese Restaurant.
the Best Costume Awards were Wang Ying Jie of Crown Macau and Chen Bi Jun of Hotel Lisboa.
The first prize winners each received MOP3,888 in cash prizes from Macau Beer as well as tickets to the upcoming Macau Grand Prix (GP), with 1st and 2nd runners-up receiving a lower cash prize of MOP2,888 and MOP1,888 respectively along with the GP tickets. Read the rest of this entry »

Black Eyed Peas to play at Venetian Macao

American hip pop group The Black Eyed Peas will be performing next month at the Venetian Macao, according to the group’s official website.
They will be heading here as part of their 13-country ‘Black, Blue and You’ world tour which will see the group travel across Asia including India, Shanghai and Singapore, but not Hong Kong.
The date of the concert has been set for October 27, to be played at the Venetian’s Arena stadium.
Originating from Los Angeles, California the four-member group is composed of will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo, and Fergie.
Since the launch of their debut album Elephunk in 2003 and the stand-out songs “Where Is The Love?,” “Shut Up” and ‘Let’s get It Started,” the group have amassed international fame for their pop influenced hip-hop style of music, with a massive 27 million albums and singles sold worldwide so far.
That first album afforded the group several accolades including 7.5 million sales of the album, four Grammy nominations and one Grammy award. Read the rest of this entry »
